As a PGA Certified Golf Coach since his graduation from the Professional Golf Management Program at Ferris State University, Scott is an active member of the golf community. He attained his PGA Class “A” status in 1996.

Coach Scott Barla received the 2023 PGA Jr. League, #GameChanger Award at the 2024 PGA Show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. Since 2019, the PGA recognizes outstanding PGA Jr. League Coaches with the #GameChanger Awards. They are really about celebrating programs that create more opportunities for more kids to play more golf.

Coach Scott Barla received the 2022 Bill Strausbaugh Award for teaching from the Ferris State alumni PGM program. The award is a special recognition given to a PGM alumni who has performed outstanding service as a golf instructor. It is the highest award given to graduates. The Ferris State PGM Alumni Bill Strausbaugh Award is a special recognition given to a PGM Alumni who has performed outstanding service as a golf instructor. The award was established in 1996 and sponsored by Dr. Robert Ewigleben.

In 2014, the PGA Indiana section began recognizing one PGA Professional for extraordinary and exemplary contributions and achievements in the area of player development. This award considers the PGA Professional’s growth of the game leadership commitment at the Section and National levels and the impact made at the facility. Finn, a PGA Jr League Player at Barla Golf Academy in the Spring of 2023. He got custom fit at BGA for his first PING Set. Then won his first place junior finish with new clubs. So he received the coveted Barla Golf Academy, White Driver Cover Award.
Coach Scott Barla’s Teaching Philosophy
At Barla Golf Academy, we understand that every golfer is unique, just like fingerprints. That’s why Coach Barla’s teaching method incorporates bio-mechanic golf swing principles, tailored to each individual. Through non-electronic and cutting-edge technology, he assess each student and creates a personalized program-plan to help them achieve their goals. His step-by-step approach includes audio and video analysis, followed by post-lesson follow-up notes in their private CoachNow player account. With the CoachNow app, students can review their lesson notes anywhere, anytime. We believe in the continual evolution of our teaching philosophy, taking into account neurological and physical restrictions, as well as the player’s body mobility. Trust and accountability are key in our instructor-student relationship, and we create custom programs that help each student develop their distinct New Golf Process. By employing the lost art of human interaction and in-person instruction, Scott provides the student with an accelerated process to play the sport for business, recreation and lifelong happiness.
PGA HOPE
Scott Barla is very proud to be part of the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) organization. Coach Barla is a Certified PGA HOPE Instructor. He is able to teach adaptive and/or disabled Golfers of all skill levels. PGA HOPE introduces golf to Veterans with disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.
PGA HOPE introduces the game of golf through a developmental curriculum, taught by PGA Professionals that are trained in adaptive golf and military cultural competency. All programs are funded by PGA REACH and supplemented by PGA Section Foundations, so the cost of programming is free to all Veterans.
PGA HOPE has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which enables Recreational Therapists to refer Veterans to the PGA HOPE program as a form of therapy. Through a robust program strategy, PGA HOPE aspires to create a physically and emotionally healthier Veteran community by shaping lives, changing lives, and possibly saving lives through the game of golf.
Scott does a great job of providing a competitive and fun environment for junior golfers. Our 10 year old son plays competitive golf and has been to Scott's golf camps and received private lessons. Each time he enjoyed learning something new about the game and felt like he was improving. Scott has also been a tremendous resource in fitting our son for the correct equipment given his skill level and goals. Whenever we had questions or requests, Scott was always timely with his responses and provided valuable insight to help us make the best investment in our son's game.
After taking lessons from Scott, my game has improved a lot. My handicap has gone down 18 points. Scott has helped me with my swing, stance and hand placement. Seeing myself on video, I am able to see my swing from different views. Scott points out areas I can improve, as well as good parts of my swing that I need to continue. His training has made a great improvement in my game.
I will be taking lessons from him again to work on my game. I know I will continue to improve.
We first met Scott Barla when he started giving our son golf lessons close to 9 years ago. Scott taught our son the fundamentals of golf at an early age. Our son is currently playing competitive golf on multiple junior tours successfully thanks to Scott’s direction. He has a great understanding of how to teach young golfers the skills as well as the rules of the game. He addresses all aspects the golf game whether it be physical or mental as well as the proper equipment needed for our son’s individual game. He is very creative with his teaching techniques. He is great working with group lessons or on an individual basis. We would highly recommend Scott as a golf instructor no matter what level of player you are. He has been both incredibly professional while remaining personable. He has been an integral piece of our son’s development as a golfer.
I have worked with Scott for 2 years. He has helped me with my golf game. When I started I was a 14 handicap and I got down to a 9. He also work with my wife (who is not a golfer).She enjoyed the lessons. I was fitted for new irons at his new facility. It is very professional. I look forward to working with Scott this winter.
I have enjoyed working with Scott over the past couple of years. His instructions have helped me be more consistent with my golf swing and putting stroke. I especially like the videos. It helps to see what I am actually doing and I can review them later as needed.

We met Scott Barla and started working with him about 3 years ago when our son was a freshman in high school. Scott has always been professional, knowledgeable and helpful in providing ways to improve our son’s golf game. After growing 5 inches in one year, we worked with Scott to find a new set of clubs that would fit him properly. Scott spent a ton of time trying out several different head and shaft combinations.
